Yesterday started off as a typical day for many of us twelve years ago.I had just gotten dressed and was drinking some coffee when the news abruptly stopped and went to live coverage of New York City. The voice-over reporter was telling viewers that a plane, American Airlines Flight 11 of had been hijacked and crashed at roughly 466 mph (790 km/h or 219 m/s or 425 knots) into the north face of the North Tower (1 WTC) of the World Trade Center, between floors 93 and 99 at 8:46m. I just sat there with my roommate’s boyfriend talking about why someone would do such a thing. We both turned to look at the TV screen when at 9:02 am we see the second plane, American Airlines Flight 175 crash at about 590 mph (950 km/h, 264 m/s or 513 knots) into the south face of the South Tower (2 WTC) of the World Trade Center, between floors 77 and 85.
I’ll be honest,the first thing I said was “Holy #$*@! Did you see that?! I didn’t imagine that did I?” Phillip assured me it was real. By this time my roommate was in the living room asking what was going on. She had been getting ready to go out with Phillip for the day and she had no clue what was going on. By this time the news was scrambling to keep up with the events. The three of us just sat there shocked.
Just as we thought we had seen and heard enough that day, at around 10 am I get a call from a friend who tells me that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. A young man we both knew worked there and his family was waiting on word about him. Thankfully he survived but suffered a broken arm. Sadly, my boss lost his younger sister, who worked at Cantor-Fitzgerald.
At 10:03 United Airlines Flight 93 was crashed by its hijackers and passengers at 583 mph (926 km/h, 272 m/s, or 509 knots), due to fighting in the cockpit 80 miles (129 km) southeast of Pittsburgh in Somerset, Pennsylvania.
We had a small portable radio turned to the local news station all day at work. Everyone was just dumbfounded like “This is America. We shouldn’t have even to consider an act like these.”
You would think that such an event would be taught in schools so our children can understand American history better and why our freedom can be threatened at any moment. Guess what? My children had no clue about what happened today!! I was dumbfounded and shocked. I mean this moment is what I read later, “This generation’s Pearl Harbor”. At first I didn’t grasp it but later I realized the correlation. Pearl Harbor was attacked without warning just like the Twin Towers and the Pentagon was.
I believe that something is wrong. I’m trying to find out what other parents and people out there think. Should our children be taught this in their classes?I would like to hear your thoughts and ideas on this. If you are a teacher and did teach about this, what did you teach and how did you present the lesson?
My husband and I believe that our children need to be taught about this. Our children are in kindergarten, second and fourth grade and we took a few minutes to teach our children about 9/11. They told us that the schools never even mentioned it. Yes, I understand that schools have requirements as far as what they have to teach but for gosh sakes, it’s just one day a year. I doubt taking a break one day a year to teach the children about 9/11 will really hurt anything or anyone. Shoot, it might inspire some little boy or girl out there to maybe become a fire fighter, a nurse or a high school student who is wondering what career path they should chose to talk to a military recruiter.
