An update from the home front and a guest blogger post

Hello dear readers. No I did not fall off the face of the earth but somethings came up recently that we were not expecting. As you all know, our youngest son, Gabriel, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. A few weeks ago he stopped breathing during the night and we were brought to the local children’s hospital where he was admitted. While he was there the doctors decided that he needed a gastrostomy tube which is better known as a “g-tube”.  A gastrostomy tube (also called a G-tube) is a tube inserted through the abdomen that delivers nutrition directly to the stomach. It’s one of the ways doctors can make sure kids with trouble eating get the fluid and calories they need to grow. Children with SMA often are labelled as “failure to thrive” since they have such a hard time gaining weight. Also since he really isn’t too keen on taking medicines we can use the special thing and inject his medicine thru his little side port on his extension tube.

We are home though after spending ten days in the hospital. There we learned how to set his feeding pump up, care for his G-tube insertion site, how to use his oxymeter (which measures his heart rate and oxygen level when he sleeps as well as how to use the Vaccu-Aide. A Vaccu-Aide is a suction device like the one your dentist uses to suck all the excess saliva in your mouth when he cleans your teeth. We also learned how to use the nose sucker thingy so if he gets a snotty nose we just flip a switch and clear his nose out.

My Facebook friend, Amanda Amborn graciously stepped up to the plate and wrote an awesome post about essential oils for me while we are getting our bearings straight We “met” thru a mom group that another friend who started a group for moms to be who were due around the same time. She is the one we tag if one of us burns our self, have a headache or if one of our little ones should have a rash etc. So with out further ado here is her awesome post…

My name is Amanda Amborn; I am a mother of 3 beautiful little girls Leah who is 12, Shanna who is 7, and Avarie who is 2.  And I am the wife to Nathan who is a Networking Administrator at a bank.  A close friend of mine introduced me to doTERRA essential oils about a year and a half ago because I was having some issues with food sensitivities.  She first introduced me to lemon oil and DigestZen oil which is a blend made by doTERRA for the digestive system.  Since then I have used the oils for many more aspects in my family such as baby wipes, diaper creams, hand soap, cleaning, allergies, fevers, colds, athletes foot, bug bites, sore muscles, bruises, burns… the list is endless!

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in all parts of plants.  They are very strongly fragrant.  If you have experienced the scent of a fresh rose or a sprig of freshly cut mint you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.  Essential oils are known for their fragrant appeal and through this they can lift the mood and calm senses but they have many other qualities other than aromatically.  They also have many health benefits.

What makes doTERRA essential oils different from any other essential oil you can purchase in health food stores etc.?  doTERRA has created a standard above the rest.  This is a certification called CPTG or Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade.

To achieve Certified Pure doTERRA harvests plants from its original origin.  A plant transferred out of its origin will lose quality.    Each oil is taken from different parts of plants such as the flower or the bark.  Each part of the plant needs to be harvested differently.  The oil is then steamed and the aromatic compounds are naturally released with the steam.  The temperature and the amount of pressure used is closely monitored to achieve purity.  As the steam cools the water and oil separates.  The left over essential oil is not bad it has other qualities or uses but they do not meet doTERRA standards only the aromatic pure extracts will be used in all doTERRA essential oils.

Some companies will steam too fast, too hot, or too long and the aromatic oil will not be pure.  Other companies will mix synthetic fragrances with their essential oils.  doTERRA requires all oils to have ONLY aromatic compounds to be used.

The testing continues from there.  Each batch of Certified Pure doTERRA essential oil that is harvested is passed through Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry scanners.  This separates the oil into streams and is verified to not have contaminates.  Each stream needs to have the same amount of compounds without any contamination or fillers.  Some companies might buy an oil that does not have the same amount of compounds in each stream and use that oil and use as a filler.

Can you say that the oils that you can find from other companies or in a health food store go to those lengths to make sure the essential oils you are purchasing are that good?

Essential oils can be used Aromatically, Topically, Internally, and for Household use (cleaning).  Aromatically is ideal for emotional benefits.  Topically use is ideal for spot treating pain or irritated skin and boosting immune system.  Topically you want to put the oil directly on the spot or on your feet is a great way to your whole body through the reflexology points.  Internally use is ideal for digestive issues, the mouth and throat and the urogenital tract.  Know yourself and how you react to an oil before using it internally.  **Internal method is specific to Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils only.  You will place the oil in a capsule, put a drop under your tongue, add a drop to drinking water, gargle with water, and you can use them in your cooking.  For Household use/Cleaning essential oils are great non chemical non synthetic way to kill viruses, bacteria, fungi, mold, and they smell amazing!

Now I am a mom and I know we all want to know more about how to care for our children without filling them with all the junk that is in over the counter medicines.  I’m just going to do a little comparison for you.

Have you ever been told by your doctor that you or your child’s illness is just viral and you have to let it work its course?  Yup me too!  Well that is because a doctor treats a bacterial infection with an antibiotic.  Bacteria lives on the outside of a cell on the outer membrane and an antibiotic can get to this to kill it, a virus lives within the cell inside the outer membrane of the cell.  And an antibiotic cannot penetrate through the cell to kill the virus that is making you feel miserable without killing the entire cell.  Essential oils have antibacterial AND antiviral qualities!!  So that means no more suffering while your body lets the virus run its course.  You don’t have to drink that nasty cough syrup just to get a good night sleep.

Contact me if you would like to know more specific information about your and your family’s needs.  And what oils can help you.
